Chapter 13

Last Minute Preparations

A light flashed and made Cassidy blink as a groan slipped out of her lips. Another flash followed by a click and titters sounded. Christopher’s arms tightened about her as he asked, “What’s going on?”

She opened her eyes, head resting on his chest, and frowned. Both of their mothers stood in the doorway of the living room. Mrs. Williams held an actual camera and took another photo. The sudden light made her wince.

“Mom,” Christopher complained, pulling Cassidy closer. “What are you doing and why do you have a camera?”

“Why wouldn’t I have a camera?” Mrs. Williams replied as she snapped yet another picture.

Christopher muttered something unintelligible under his breath, but Cassidy doubted it was complimentary. He rolled onto his side and took her with him. The delicate couch protested loudly, and they barely fit. She was shoved into the back of the couch, and she figured Christopher probably hung off the front.

“Alright, alright,” her mother said. “We’re sorry for disturbing you, but we’re having dinner here. Also, we brought more food for when Brianna, Brett, and his parents stay here.”

“What?” he asked, looking at her with a furrowed brow.

“I’m sorry. I forgot to mention it. On the twenty-third, they’re all coming to stay. Brett’s parents will leave on the twenty-sixth, like Brett and Brianna.”

His mouth opened for a moment, no doubt guessing about the sleeping arrangements, then he nodded. “Ah.”

“Sorry,” she mouthed.

He shook his head and whispered, “It’s fine.”

She couldn’t see her mother or Mrs. Williams from her current position. Christopher did not move, and she knew that both of their mothers probably stood there watching them. Cassidy gave him a smile before pushing his chest. He grinned, then started to sit up. They re-situated on the couch, which protested with their movements.

Cassidy frowned. She’d been correct. Her mother smiled happily while Mrs. Williams lifted her camera again. Christopher raised a hand, blocking his face, as he snapped, “Mom, seriously?”

“What?” Mrs. Williams asked, lowering the camera. “You’ll want these pictures someday.”

Somehow, she very much doubted it. This was not something she wanted to remember. Cassidy was lying to everyone she cared about. Christopher glared at his mother as he stood up, stretching. Unable to stop herself, she followed the movement of his body before yanking her gaze away. Cassidy got to her feet and strode to her mother, who smiled. She rolled her eyes and headed past her to the kitchen. She’d completely forgotten they were having dinner here.

Her mother and Mrs. Williams followed Cassidy to the kitchen. Grocery bags sat on the counter, and she began searching through them. “What are you making?” she asked.

“Chicken, potatoes, and salad,” Mrs. Williams replied. “We wanted to keep it simple.”

“Sounds good. Can I help?” she asked.

This time her mother answered, “No, sweetheart, we’ve got it.”

“Okay,” Cassidy said before leaving the kitchen.

When she stepped into the hallway, she stopped, almost bumping into Christopher. He gave her a smile, clasping her shoulders. “You okay?”

She nodded. Cassidy could not seem to say anything as she stared at Christopher, heart pounding.
